This is an old lacquered papier mache tray with mother-of-pearl inlay. The mother-of-pearl forms a scene in the center of the tray featuring people,I believe a wise man, and stylized trees. The top of the rim is also inlaid with a repeating motif in MOP. The tray measures 13 in diameter and the sides of the tray have a height of 1. The tray weighs 1 lb and 4 oz. It is in very good condition with the exception of about 6 or 7 tiny flakes to the lacquer finish on the edge of the top rim, really minor, and two others on the edge of the underside as well as a small chip and impact on the underside (see last close-up photos). The damage is normal for old papier mache and the piece still displays very well despite any minor damage.
